Shape control of multi-cellular inflatable panels

N. KATAYAMA, K. ISHIMURA, K. MINESUGI, DANIEL J. INMAN

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 276-282 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0267-5

Abstract:

Multi-cellular inflatable structures are ultra-light and robust against membrane damage such as pinholes caused by space debris. Due to their robustness, inflatable structures supported by inner gases can be applied as space structures. In the present study, shape control for a simple multi-cellular inflatable panel was achieved via a novel diaphragm mechanism. When the bending actuator in a center membrane bends, the inner pressures of sub-cells become different, and the diaphragm mechanism bends as a whole. Because a sliding component is not included, this deformable system is a reliable mechanism. In addition, the proposed mechanism has higher rigidity than that of a bending actuator used alone. In the present paper, we investigate the feasibility of a novel diaphragm mechanism and its characteristics using experimental and numerical results.

Abstract: development of geotechnical plasticity is reviewed and some problems of applying the classic plastic mechanicsBy giving up the three hypotheses, a generalized plastic potential theory can be obtained from solid mechanicsdirectly, and then the traditional plastic mechanics can be changed to a more generalized plastic mechanics, namely generalized plastic mechanics (GPM).

A regularization scheme for explicit level-set XFEM topology optimization

Markus J. GEISS, Jorge L. BARRERA, Narasimha BODDETI, Kurt MAUTE

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2019, Volume 14, Issue 2,   Pages 153-170 doi: 10.1007/s11465-019-0533-2

Abstract: Regularization of the level-set (LS) field is a critical part of LS-based topology optimization (TO) approaches. Traditionally this is achieved by advancing the LS field through the solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation combined with a reinitialization scheme. This approach, however, may limit the maximum step size and introduces discontinuities in the design process. Alternatively, energy functionals and intermediate LS value penalizations have been proposed. This paper introduces a novel LS regularization approach based on a signed distance field (SDF) which is applicable to explicit LS-based TO. The SDF is obtained using the heat method (HM) and is reconstructed for every design in the optimization process. The governing equations of the HM, as well as the ones describing the physical response of the system of interest, are discretized by the extended finite element method (XFEM). Numerical examples for problems modeled by linear elasticity, nonlinear hyperelasticity and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in two and three dimensions are presented to show the applicability of the proposed scheme to a broad range of design optimization problems.

Evaluating the material strength from fracture angle under uniaxial loading

Jitang FAN

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 2,   Pages 288-293 doi: 10.1007/s11709-018-0480-8

Abstract: The most common experimental methods of measuring material strength are the uniaxial compressive and tensile tests. Generally, shearing fracture model occurs in both the tests. Compressive strength is higher than tensile strength for a material. Shearing fracture angle is smaller than 45° under uniaxial compression and greater than 45° under uniaxial tension. In this work, a unified relation of material strength under uniaxial compression and tension is developed by correlating the shearing fracture angle in theory. This constitutive relation is quantitatively illustrated by a function for analyzing the material strength from shear fracture angle. A computational simulation is conducted to validate this theoretical function. It is full of interest to give a scientific illustration for designing the high-strength materials and engineering structures.
